Rage and the Machines? Force Mechanization and Violence against Civilians

Abstract There is an ongoing discussion regarding the role of mechanized forces in counterinsurgency warfare. Proponents note that they boost counterinsurgents’ ability to fight while critics point out diminish their gather information. This adds this by focusing on violence against civilians, outcome theory suggests should be affected mechanization via both these channels. Results from quantitative analyses employing new data and covering period 1989–2016 indicate unrelated number civilians killed government but positively associated with rebels. These results are line idea increases fighting decreases information-gathering abilities. By offering evidence have a place modern counterinsurgency, contribute academics’ practitioners’ understanding armed intrastate conflict.
